Day Skipper Tidal Combined Theory and Practical
This 9 day course will teach you everything you need to confidently navigate and skipper a yacht in familiar, tidal waters by day. It comprises 4 days of classroom based theory and 5 days of practical training. The stand-alone Day Skipper Shorebased course is a 5 day course and the practical course is another 5 days. Since there is a fair amount of overlap between the two courses, the two courses can be condensed into 9 days provided they are taught together.
There are two options for this dividing the theory and practical elements of this course:
- 4 days theory followed by 5 days practical (Thu to Sun theory, Mon to Fri practical)
- 2 days theory, 5 days practical, 2 days theory (Sat/Sun theory, Mon to Fri practical, Sat/Sun theory)
The second option is ideal for those with time constraints who only wish to take one week off work and is the most common choice. Either option works well though.
On this course you will gain a thorough introduction to navigation and seamanship theory. You will cover subjects such as nautical terms, safety, chartwork, tides and tidal streams, meteorology, passage planning, pilotage and international regulations for preventing collisions at sea. On the practical side, you will learn basic skippering techniques and boathandling skills in a variety of mooring situations. Under the guidance of your instructor, you will be put in charge on short passages and cover subjects such as deck work, sail trim, ropework, emergency situations and man overboard drill.
Assessment for the theoretical element of the course is in the form of two short exam papers. There is no exam for the practical element, assessment takes the form of continual assessment by the instructor during the week.
Successful completion of this course also qualifies British citizens, UK residents or non-EU citizens to purchase the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) which may be required if you charter a yacht in certain European countries - application forms are available from the RYA website. The new photo-id style RYA Day Skipper certificate is now widely accepted for yacht charter worldwide as it carries a translation into 13 European languages on the reverse like the ICC.
