This course is designed for both complete beginners, and those who have had some experience of either dinghy sailing or sail cruising. Our aim is to give you an enjoyable introduction to sail cruising.
The syllabus includes a solid foundation in seamanship, boathandling, safety at sea, nautical terms, rope work, sail handling, rules of the road, helmsmanship and general duties above and below deck.
On completion of this course, you should be a confident, useful crew member of a cruising yacht. Successful completion of this course also gives you the minimum practical requirements to be able to book onto the RYA Day Skipper course. It is highly recommended you also do the Day Skipper Shorebased course to satisfy the minimum theoretical requirements prior to taking the Day Skipper practical course.
If you´re interested in learning about chartwork and would like to get more out of your Competent Crew course, why not take our online Essential Navigation and Seamanship course via our RYA Interactive page prior to doing the Competent Crew practical course. This will give you a foundation in navigation theory which you can put into practice on board.
